Our low carbon heating projects

Southwark Council aims to be ‘net zero carbon’ by 2030.

Find out how we’re reducing our impact on the environment with our low carbon heating systems.

SELCHP low carbon heat network

The South East London Combined Heat and Power (SELCHP) facility is a waste incinerator in Lewisham which generates heat and electricity.

We use low carbon heat from SELCHP for some of our heat network systems.

A network of pipes takes low carbon heat from SELCHP to Bermondsey where it provides heating and hot water to around 2,650 council homes.

We’re currently exploring how we can use even more low carbon heat from SELCHP to serve properties in the Old Kent Road and Peckham areas.

Ground source heat pumps

Three estates in Southwark have ‘open loop’ ground source heat pumps, Consort, Newington and Wyndham.

They were the firs in London to connect to ground source heat pumps linked to the aquifer.

They draw heat from the London aquifer 100 metres below ground, saving 1,700 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

This is the same as taking more than 1,600 cars off the road.

The project aims to reduce energy usage by over 34% compared to the previous networks.

Find out more about our ground source heat pumps on a video about the Mayor of London’s Low Carbon Accelerators (from 3.57).
