Streetscape design manual (SSDM)

How we set design standards for Southwark's streets. Our aims to make them safer, better maintained and greener.

Design standards register

The Streetscape Design Manual contains registers. They give our approved design requirements for streets and spaces. They include design standards for:

  • pavement constructions
  • drainage
  • street trees
  • parking restrictions
  • traffic signs
  • tactile paving

They explain when to use features and how to design them.

Read the procedures register to find out how to apply for departure approval to change a design feature. For details of how to add features not in the design standards, email highways@southwark.gov.uk

The following are our current approved design standards. They are always under review. Some refer to the highways works contract technical specifications:

Technical specification numbered appendices (Lot B Doc B3d Tech Spec NA v1 20-01-31) (PDF, 2.3MB)

Technical specification minor alterations (Lot B Doc B3c Tech Spec MA v1 20-01-31) (PDF, 643KB)

Technical specification additional, substitute and cancelled clauses (Lot B Doc B3b Tech Spec ASC v1 20-01-31) (PDF, 1.8MB)
