Southwark Internships: Shape future paths to success

Hello! my name is Muhammad Zakaria, though I do prefer to be called Zak - as it is short and simple. I am currently 18 years of age. I studied Computer Science in college, I speak two languages which I am fluent in both, English and Bengali.

I am currently working in the Housing Solutions department as an Intern, learning more about the different roles within the department and seeing how they integrate and work together. My close associates describe me as ambitious, compassionate, and philosophical. I am into travelling, landscape mountains, and views.

The biggest risk I thought at the time I was taking, had to be going to work in an environment with adults who had severe mental health. I believed at the time I wouldn’t be able to complete my work experience due to being afraid and having no experience - however it has been significant in my growth as its taught me to be resilient, humble and be able to adapt to different environments and communicate with people.

One of my recent achievements I am proud of has to be, being considered for this Internship and then having impressed the managers in Housing Modernisation to be involved in their amazing team.

What drew me to want to be a part of the Southwark Internship Scheme is that, being a Southwark resident myself, I’ve seen the amazing support they have given residents in the community and how they have changed lives. Therefore, I want to be part of their vision - as I feel there is still room for progression. Initially, I would like to gain more skills, knowledge and experience whilst being educated and develop my understanding on how the Council operates as well as the different systems in place. This is also part of my self-development and educating myself. I want to broaden my network and learn from professionals in different fields. Additionally, I want to be able to reflect and see what industry I would like to grow and pursue a career in.
