Southwark Internships: Shape future paths to success

Jenny Lee-Kearns

My name is Jenny Lee-Kearns but I mostly go by Jen.  I am an intern working in the Housing and Modernisation directorate. I enjoy writing short stories and flash fiction in  my spare time. I would describe my writing as mysterious, tense and a little scary. I also enjoy going out to see my favourite DJ’s and producers live, hence my picture with glitter all over my face. My friends would describe me as imaginative, persistent and caring.

The biggest risk I have taken I would say is leaving home and starting university. I put a lot of pressure on myself to graduate well. Many of my friends decided against applying for higher education, as the thought of being in debt made it seem like an unattainable route. I decided to take the risk and experience it for myself. The achievement I am most proud of is graduating university with a grade I worked hard for regardless of the challenges I faced along the way.

I’d never considered working for a local authority until I came across an advert for the internship scheme. It felt like a glowing opportunity I couldn’t ignore, as it offered valuable experience working for the council of the borough I grew up in. What I hope to gain from this internship programme is confidence, valuable and transferable experience, and a clearer idea of what I would like to do in the future.
