Southwark Internships: Shape future paths to success

Deborah Missengue

Deborah Missengue

Hello Everyone. My name is Deborah Missengue, and I am an Intern with Southwark’s Web Team. I recently graduated from King’s College London with a degree in History. I really enjoyed learning about pressing issues such as the legacies of colonialism, the implications of globalisation in the twenty first century and the dangers of Eurocentrism. Alongside this internship, I will also be studying for my Graduate Law Diploma, as I am keen to learn more about the relationship between politics, society and the law.

Beyond my degree and aims, I enjoy throwing myself into new opportunities. In 2019, I spent a year abroad studying in Vancouver, Canada, where I had the chance to travel not only within Canada but the U.S also. This included several new activities such as hiking, skiing, but also learning about local indigenous communities and their history. This experience has ever since infected me with a travel bug and I always try to explore locally, which has been super useful during the pandemic.

In terms of hobbies, I competed in competitive sports for a number of years, including representing West Ham under 16 when I was 11. I am also an avid theatre goer and my personal favourites including Translations at the National Theatre and the world renowned Hamilton. From a young age, however, it is music that I really fell in love with and taught myself to play both Piano and Guitar. In my spare time, I try to work on both lyrical and instrumental compositions and in the future hope to expand my page for it. I also really enjoy spoken word and have performed at a couple of open mics at my university, which covers a range of themes including identity, gender and race.

What I hope to gain from this internship, is firstly to learn more about the work and the structure of local government. I have always admired the work of local councils and the work they do to build positive relationships with those within their communities. Whilst, within the web steam specifically, I hope to learn more about the needs of users, the challenges of accessibility and ensuring Southwark’s website is an inclusive environment for all. Everyone I have met so far has been wonderful and I look forward to getting to know more of you.
