Southwark Internships: Shape future paths to success

Olaoluwa Olupona

My name is Olaoluwa Olupona and I am an intern working in the Housing and Modernisation directorate. I love anime, I started watching as a child and enjoyed the character designs and animation. I actively watch anime due to its diverse genres and unique story telling.

My best friend would describe me as kind, calm and funny. The biggest risk I have ever taken so far is working on a business idea. I didn’t have a fashion or design background. I managed to receive funding coincidentally to turn that dream into a reality.

The achievement I am most proud of so far is graduating from university especially after my mother passed away. I am proud that I was able to finish and complete my degree during such a difficult period for me.

What drew me to the Southwark Council’s internship scheme is the opportunity to work on projects that have a direct impact on the community. I also wanted to understand my local council from the inside and know how it works as an organisation. Additionally, the determination from the council in providing young people with practical work experience in these challenging times.

What I hope to gain from my internship with Southwark Council is to grow personally as an individual within the three months. I would like to have a deeper knowledge of my department and the direct impact it has on Southwark residents. I also want to gain exposure to different career paths and a bigger personal network to access in the future.
