Southwark Internships: Shape future paths to success

My name is Femilia Mansaray and I am 23 years old and I’m an intern in the HR department. A fun fact about me is that I was part of the original team of bakers for a children’s charity for my secondary school where I got to meet Dame Vivienne Westwood. This was a big deal for me as Westwood is an inspiration. My friends would describe me as attentive, resilient and empathetic

The biggest risk I have taken so far is exploring a change in my career path. I had always believed I would become a lawyer and studied all the right subjects. I completed my undergraduate law degree and started my masters/LPC course to become a solicitor, but I soon realised that I was no longer truly passionate about this field. Neither did I find it as fulfilling as I thought it would be. During the lockdown, I took some time to self-reflect about my career aspirations, ambitions and what was of interest to me. One career field that stood out to me was Human Resources, my friends and family agreed that this was well suited to me. I then did some research into the role of Human Resources and this internship couldn’t have come at the right to for me to truly explore and experience what it is like to work in HR.

An achievement that I am most proud of to date is spending six months in my country Sierra Leone. It was a great learning experience to adapt to a new surrounding and way of life. It helped me learn the value of giving back to society and I started a donation service of clothes, book and toys to orphanages to help in whatever way I could and to make life easier for those struggling and in need of help.

What I hope to gain from this internship is a confirmation that HR is indeed the career field I want to be in, to gain the insight and knowledge of the different roles within HR, to learn the necessary skills, experience and network needed to fulfil the role needed to work in HR. I hope to make great contacts and develop good relationships with colleagues.
